King Sihamoni will attend the commemoration service marking the 60th anniverary of the loss of Kampuchea Krom territories

Reported by Khmerization

King Sihamoni (pictured) will attend the commemoration service marking the loss of Kampuchea Krom territories to Vietnam, reports Deum Ampil newspaper.

On 4th June 1949, the French parliament had voted to give control of Kampuchea Krom territories, which included more than 21 provinces of Cambodia, to Vietnam.

According to the appeal letter of Khmer Krom Association dated 1st May, King Sihamoni will attend the 60th anniversary of the loss of Kampuchea Krom territories, when during the previous years' commemorations only his representatives attended, says Deum Ampil.

However, there is no official confirmation from the royal palace yet and the government said that there might not be the presence of the king at the commemoration service at all.

The Khmer Krom Association said that this year's commemoration will be held in front of the Botum Vaddey pagoda in Phnom Penh where 1949 monks will be invited to perform a religious sermon commemorating the souls of Khmer Krom heroes and the loss of Kampuchea Krom territories.

Since 2000, Khmer Krom people around the world and Khmer Krom communities in Cambodia had always held a commemoration service to mark the loss of Kampuchea Krom on the 4th of June, reports Deum Ampil.

If the king attends this commemoration service, it is a sign that the king is taking his decision independent of the government. But I am worried that the government will stop him from attending. I know the king wants to attend, but he is a constitutional king who reigns but does not rule, therefore he has to listen to the government or Hun Sen will abolish the monarchy.
