Warning fires caused tensions in Preah Vihear

Thai troops kept watch near Preah Vihear temple.

Reported by Khmerization

Warning fires by Thai troops had caused heightened military tensions near the Preah Vihear temple for about 14 minutes, reports Koh Santepheap newspaper.

Koh Santepheap reported that, at round 2 pm on 25th April, Thai troops based at the frontline at Sombok Khmum, about 200 metres from the Veal Entry frontline, accidentally fired 5 rounds of ammunitions, triggering the Cambodian troops to fire 3 rounds of ammuntions back in warning.

A Thai soldier based at the frontline told Koh Santepheap in Khmer that "Thai troops want peace and that border issues will be left to both governments to resolve."

However, Khmer soldiers based at the frontline told Koh Santepheap that they don't believe that the 5 rounds of gunfires were accidental. They were deliberately fired as these kinds of 'accidental fires' happened too many times in the past.

Deadly armed clashes had erupted between Khmer and Thai troops at Veal Entry on 15th October 2008 and on 3rd April 2009 where several Khmer and Thai troops were killed.
